KING EDWARD OAKS
ACORNS FROM FORT BELVEDERE.
STORY OF WOMAN'S DEVOTION.
(From The Guardian's Special Corres-
pondent—By Air Mail)
LONDON, July 17,
"King Edward VIII. oak seedlings from guaranteed Fort Belvedere acorns." This is an extract from an advertisement which appears this week in a news magazine, and behind those two lines lies a story of a woman's devotion to the Duke of Windsor. . Towards the end of last summer a white-haired woman used to make frequent journeys to Fort Belvedere. Where some of the fine oaks sent their sweeping boughs over the estate fence, she would stoop and collect handfuls of the acorns. Back at her home in Surrey she planted each one in a special part of the garden. An ardent admirer of the Prince, she intended to present all her friends with one of the growing seedlings to plant as a King Edward VIII. Coronation oak. Then came the abdication. Miss Howes' s plans were upset, but she continued to tend the oaks. Now, her loyalty to the Duke unimpaired, she has had the idea of offering them to other people. She said this week: "They are of | great historical interest, coming as i they do from the place that King Edward loved so much. I know there are many other people who would like to keep his memory alive by planting one of these trees in their garden." She is offering them at 25s each.
