BROOKSIDE

Mrs F. S. Candy presided over a record attendance at the monthly meeting of the Brookside Women's Institute last Friday. A report on the conference meeting held recently in Christchurch was read and discussed. A letter of thanks was received from the organisers of St. Saviour's fair, for produce, cakes and other goods sent in by members. At a previous meeting it was decided to donate 10s 6d to the Nurse Maude Association, members offering to subsidise this amount. Through their generosity, the sum has been increased to nearly £2 10s, one member donating £1 to the fund. Mrs A. E. Withell, of

"Raywell," Brookside, very kindly offered her garden for the garden party to be held on December 6 in place of the December meeting. The demonstration on pewter work was very ably given by Miss D. Brooks, who also showed some fine examples of her work. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Brooks. The roll call, "My worst mistake in cooking," proved most entertaining. The competition for prettiest cup and saucer, resulted in Mrs Bowden and Mrs F. S. Candy being placed first equal, Mrs W. Brooks second, and Mrs Taylor third. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs J. Brooks, with Mrs F. S. Candy second and Mesdames Graham, Hight and W. Brooks (equal) third. During the social halfhour two competitions were held, Miss J. Brooks and Mrs Saunders being the winners. The hostesses were Mesdames Cridge, Bowden and Saunders.
