PREPARATIONS FOR DEC. 5
The Rev. D. N. Pryor presided over a meeting of the Presbyterian Flower Show Committee to make final arrangements for the show to be held on December 5.
The appointment of the following judges was confirmed: —Cookery, Mrs Rowell (Springston); needlework, Mrs M. E. Lyons (Christchurch); decorative, Mrs King (Christchurch); flowers and vegetables, Mr H. L. Darton (Christchurch); grain and seeds, Mr D. White (Leeston).
It was decided to invite the mem-ber-elect for the district to officially open the show at 2.30 p.m.
The following were appointed to canvass for entries for the show:— Lakeside, Mrs Nairn and Miss Manson; Leeston, Mesdames Martin, Taylor and Cartwright; Irwell, Misses McLaughlin and B. Winchester; Killinchy, Misses G. Lemon and McClure; Brookside, Mrs W. O. Rennie and Miss Candy; Doyleston, Mesdames Turner and Williams.
A letter was received from Mr A. J. Inwood, of the Southbridge Horticultural Society, granting the loan of the society's marquee and other equipment. The arranging of transport to and from Southbridge was left in the hands of the Transport Committee.
Mr Forbes Taylor was appointed to take charge of the erection of the marquee on Wednesday evening prior to the show, and Mr D. H. Reid to take charge of the shifting of the tables and trestles from the Sunday School Hall to the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon, as many as possible to give assistance. All helpers are asked to meet at the hall early on Wednesday evening to arrange tables and stalls.
Mr A. Boyd was appointed to arrange the staging in the supper room.
Messrs G. Rodgers, D. White, J. B. Anderson and D. H. Reid were appointed doorkeepers. The charge for refreshments was fixed at Is for luncheon and 6d for afternoon tea or supper. A fat sheep for a weightguessing competition was donated in the room, and enquiries are to be made for a fat lamb and a pig.
Mesdames R. Jackman and R. J. Gilbert were appointed as conveners of the refreshment committee, and Mrs Turner convener of the home produce stall for the afternoon. A donation of a ham for the supper room was received with thanks.
The meeting, though not largely attended, was marked by the enthusiasm of those present, and everything points to the flower show of 1935 being a most successful one.
