TO STEWART'S GULLY
SCHOOL, AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' PICNIC.
DATE FIXED, SATURDAY,
NOVEMBER 30
The meeting held in the Leeston School last night of delegates from Leeston and district school committees, of friendly societies, Ellesmere Band and Fire Brigade, to discuss matters concerning the combined schools' and friendly societies' picnic, was most successful. There was a large attendance and a full representation of the different organisations interested in the venture, and the proceedings were of the unanimous and cordial nature which will make for the success of the picnic. The delegates were welcomed by Mr R. Grant, chairman of the Leeston School Committee, who remarked that the large attendance augured well for the success of the picnic. The first question decided was whether to have a picnic or not. There was no discussion, the meeting being unanimously in favour of a picnic. Mr A. A. McMillan was elected secretary of the picnic committee and Mr D. H. Reid was elected chairman.
A vote of- sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. Connolly, M.P., was carried; also a similar vote to Mr G. H. Ryde, in, the death of his brother.
The stationmaster, Mr J. A. Creagh, was present, and gave a list of picnic resorts in Canterbury and information regarding facilities and fares. The chairman remarked that if a short trip were decided upon a sports meeting could be held, but if a long trip were favoured sports could not very well be undertaken. The cost of the fares was a matter which should also be considered. After consideration of a number of places, it was unanimously decided to go to Stewart's Gully. The date fixed was Saturday, November 30.
Leeston Town Board is to be approached to ask the shopkeepers to give their employees the morning off.
Mr T. F. Owens said that the Ellesniere Brass Band had agreed to join in with the picnic—an announcement which was greeted with applause. A vote of thanks was accorded to the band for its decision.
An application is to be made to the Railway Department for a special train, the time suggested for leaving Southbridge being 8.15 a.m., to arrive on the return journey about 6.30 p.m. All school and friendly society delegates present were appointed a committee to run the sports. Members present spoke favourably of the manner in which last year's sports were conducted and it was proposed to run them this year on the same lines. Any arrangements for sports fixtures for adults will be made on the ground. An executive was set up to consist of the chairman, secretary, Mr W. H. Cartwright and one delegate from each organisation represented at the meeting. An invitation is to be given to the Druids' Lodge at Springston to take part in the picnic, if desired. The next general meeting of delegates will be held on Monday, November 18, at 8 p.m. A vote of thanks was passed to the stationmaster for his attendance at and for advice given to the meeting.
