OBITUARY

MR KENNETH D. McMEEKAN.

There passed away recently at the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, at the age of 34 years, a popular Railway officer and enthusiastic sportsman in the person of Mr Ken McMeekan, formerly well-known in the Ellesmere district. Born at Leeston in 1901, Mr McMeekan received his education at Kirwee School and later at Darfield District High School. After leaving school he entered the Railway service at Doyleston, .and was later transferred to Wanganui, then to New Plymouth, Ohakune, Taumarunui, National Park, Taihape and Picton, being twice stationed at Picton as chief clerk until the time of contracting his last illness. Mr McMeekan was a keen .footballer, having played for several years in North Island teams, and in 1934 he coached the Waitoahi team, winners in the Marlborough competition. He was also an enthusiastic bowler, and won in 1933-34 season the junior singles, the championship singles and senior pairs of the Marlborough Club.

The funeral, which took place at Sydenham Cemetery, was largely attended. The services at the house and graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. B. Jordan, M.A., of Addington. The pall-bearers were, Messrs S. Cludgey, G. Ullrich, C. Victor (brothers-in-law), N. Down, E. and R. McMeekan (cousins). Wreaths were sent by Mr and Mrs D. A. Cludgey; Jean, Bert, and family.
