TALKIES AT SOUTHBRIDGE
"MELODY IN SPRING."
Comedy, melody and beauty, expertly woven together in Paramount's "Melody in Spring," will give patrons attending the Southbridge Town Hall to-morrow evening their first look at Lanny Ross, one of America's most famous radio singers. Lanny Ross makes his picture debut in this production as John Craddock, an ambitious singer who falls in love with the daughter of a famous radio advertiser. Apart from possessing a splendid tenor voice, Koss is young and handsome, with a fine personality and great ability. Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland, that grand comedy team, are on hand to assist Ross in his initial film appearance, and, as usual, are immensely funny. Ann Sothern, Ross's "love interest," is decorative, and sings well in the duets. It is easy to predict an extensive screen future for Ross. His voice is unlike that of any other screen singer, and he plays a different type of character, bringing a fresh personality to the screen. Included in the supporting programme is a screen song, "This Little Pig Went, to Market"; British Sound News; "Lucky Anglers," a sports item; and a comedy interlude, "News Hounds."
