In order to obtain data upon which to base consideration of the possibilities of erecting a new railway bridge over the Rakaia River, officers of the Public Works Department have, for nearly a year, been engaged in a survey of the riverbed from the present bridge to a point some miles upstream. The actual object of the survey which has now been completed, was to find out whether it would be possible, in the event of the construction of a new bridge, to shorten its length, and with this in view data relating to the fall, flood level of the river, and variations in width, have been recorded. It is stated that there is a possibility that the present combined road and rail traffic bridge will be handed over to the roading authorities for use as a public highway and that a new railway bridge will be erected.
