Mr and Mrs J. Winchester and Miss Rima Winchester, Irweil, returned on Wednesday from a visit to the North Island. Miss Eileen Thompson, hon. secretary of the Motukarara branch of the Women's Divisid*n of the N.Z. Farmers' Union, is in Wellington attending the annual conference of the Division. Messrs Robin Lambie and R. N. Fisse, of Leeston, left by car this morning on a holiday tour to Marlborough and Nelson. They intend to spend part of the holiday with Mr and Mrs Edmiston, of Motueka, formerly of Leeston. Pithead baths have been opened at Tilmanstone colliery, near Dover, with provision for each man to keep .is clean and dirty clothes in separate lockers. In the last 20 years there have been 301 explosions in British coal i mines caused by firedamp or coal dust. The number of deaths so caused has been 1377.
