"Dwell not under the delusion that money will bring unalloyed happiness —it will not. Luxury is good for no one; it kills the power of enjoyment,'; says Mr C. Harold Smith, a successful London financier, in "The Highway to Success." He continues: "Wealth beyond that which is necessary for comfort, is a superfluity to any man. 'He is most rich who stops at competence, not labours on until the worn heart grows sere.' When you have made a success and accumulated a competence, then is the! time—as you cannot take your money with you—to seek some nobler aim. The recipe for living a long life is to live a good life—active in mind and body. Live to make yourself loved while you live, and honoured after you are dead. The active-mind-ed man cannot rest upon his laurels— if he does, lu"s laurels will soon rest on him. When the intense desire for achievement no longer exists, when aspiration and delights are dulled, the very salt wherewith success must\be savoured loses its relish. It is the pursuit, not the catching, that gives zest to the game. . . . There are blessings that money cannot buy; memories of happy days, of loyal friends and cherished thoughts. Make these the companions of your declining years; then you will lay up a lasting treasure that none can steal, and in the tranquil shadow of the approaching silence you will have won that quiet peace whigh passeth all understanding."
