It seems incredible, but 22,000 gum-" eas were actually paid for a carpet at Christie's, the famous London auction rooms, recently.; It is known as "The Emperor's Carpet," was made in Per--1 sia in the .sixteenth century, and later . came into the hands of Peter the Great ,of Russia. Only a week or two previously an^j other splendid Oriental carpet changed x hands in New York for £21,900. Sev- * eral famous carpets of somewhat similar kind can be seen by visitors to; London, and would fetch big prices at auction. But they are not likely to be sold—they are national property, housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
