AN OPEN-AIR SCHOOL

NEW BUILDING FOR LEESTON

REMODELLING PLAN DROPPED,

THE LATEST RECOMMENDATION.

OUTCOME OF INSPECTION. v

Though tho Education Board recently received a grant from the Department for the remodelling o f the Leeston School, and the builders were about to commence work this week, there is a probability that the remodelling plans will be abandoned and a new school of the <ppen air type erected. -* -*'

A visit of inspection, was made to the school yesterday by Mi- 0. S. Thompson, chairman of the Board, Mr W, H. Winsor, chairman of the Buildings Committee, and Mr Eiley, clerk of works. They were accompanied by Professor Osborne, of Winnipeg. " After their inspection; the delegation expressed their intention to the School Committee of recommending that, instead of spending the grant, on the present building, a new open-air school on the lines of the one at Te~ jmuka should be built. Mr Thompson has undertaken to interview the Minister of Education (the Hon. E. A. Wright) in Wellington.

The amount of the grant, £1000, will cover the cost of two open-air classrooms. The Committee has agreed t<r contribute the sum of £110, raised some time ago for installing a heating system, in the present school and for general school purposes, toAvards the cost of the third room. With the sabsidy provided by the Education Board, it is expected that there will be a sufficient sum to finance the build-

ling of three new rooms. Provided the assent of the Department is obtained, the erection of the three new rooms will probably be commenced at an early date. This will avoid the inconvenience of finding temporary accommodation for the classes while the builders are at work, as the old school will still be used until the new rooms are ready.
