FIXED CONDENSERS

TESTING FOR BREAKDOWN,

To prove that a condenser can be charged and Avill hold a charge, connect one side of a pair of telephones to one side of a dry battery, say, a 45----volt block high tension unit, and the other side of the phones to one side of the condenser. Noav put the earphones on and touch the condenser with a lead from the remaining side of the 'battery. A loud click will be heard, and if the lead is remoA Ted and. replaced seA reral times, the clicks will become weaker as the condenser becomes charged. If the clicks are heard at the same strength each time, the connexion is made, and you Avill know that the condenser under test has broken down. By connecting the charged condenser across a voltmeter, a sharp movement of .the needle will be noticed as the condenser discharges. If a voltmeter is not available a short piece of bus bar wire or screwdriA'.r can be used successfully. Place wire or sereAvclriver on one terminal of- condenser and sloAvly make connexion Avith the other terminal of condenser. If component under test is 0.X., a bright spark aviU be noticed as wire or scredwriver touches second condenser terminal.

load connecting bars inside the colls. (2) Place on charge until the plates have received a good charge (1.270 or over). (3) Carefully clean all the tops of the cells, and the terminal stems, and give all metal parts a coat of vaseline, (4) Store away as dry charged cell. When it is desired to again use the accumulator it will be necessary to gi\-e it a charge until maximum charge condition is again obtained. If your battery is shoAving a Avhitish coating on the plates before you commence storing operations, it would be well to give it a lengthy charge at a loav rate of charging until the plates become free of the deposit.
