INTERESTING TYRE TESTS.
Exhaustive tyre tests were carried out in England recently by Professor A. M. Low, an eminent scientist. He has established that climatic conditions greatly affect the tyre life. Tyres used for equal mileages in summer and winter have suffered to varying degrees. Professor Low attributes this to the unconscious maintenance of lower speeds during bad weather and to the difference in friction between wet and dry surfaces. He states definitely that summer wear is approximately twice that which occurs in winter for an equivalent mileage. Further ho has found that the wear on tyros running on water bound macadam is three times that which occurs on asphalt or tar sealed surfaces. Professor Low also found that an error of J-in. in the toe-in of the front wheels, produced the same effect as if the tyre was pushed sideways for 16 miles for every 1000 miles of normal forward travel.
