AGED OARSMAN'S RECORD.
The 78 years '-old oarsman, Mr W, H. Eyre, wlio rowed in an eight at the Richmond Boxing Day regatta, made some interesting comments on his long experience of sport. His racing career at Henley lasted from 1870 to 1882, and he only missed one regatta during those years. The list of his successes is a long one, including the Thames Challenge Cup in 1872, the Wyfolds in 1870 and 1871, the Grand in 1876 and 1878, and the Stewards' in 1880.
A reference to the Silver Goblets recalled to Mr Eyre his association with J. Hastie in three victories. "Hastie," said Mr Eyre, "stroked the Thames crews for a good many years. He will be remembered by all oarsmen of that period as one of the best men who ever rowed in a boat, and who was undoubtedly the best stroke." The best sculler, in Mr Eyre's opinion, was Hanlon, the Canadian.
In addition to his trophies for rowing, Mr Eyre also holds several for swimming, and he was also a keen boxer, belonging to the West End London Boxing Club, the first amateur club ever started. He is also an original member of the Thames Hare and Hounds Club.
