The annual meeting of subscribers to the Killinchy Public Library is called for to-morrow evening.

The Railway Department announce that, with the exception of a special timetable on the Christchurch-Lyttelton line all train services will be suspended on Anzae Day. A euchre tournament and dance in aid of one of the stalls at the comingbazaar is to be held at Sedgeincre oil Thursday night.

Owing to many of those interested being absent from the district, the Leeston Football Club has postponed the euchre tournament advertised for to-night.

The Ellcsmerc Technical Association gives notice that dressmaking and millinery, classes will start at Leeston next Monday and at Southbridge on Thursday.

Mr P. J. 'Kellehcr, of Leeston, listening in on a Radiola five-valve set, picked up, on the loud speaker, the Norwegian whaling ship "liarsen," about 7 p.m. on Good Friday.

The opening of the Doyleston Miniature Rifle Club's season is to take place on Friday evening next. It is desired to have a good muster of members and those who intend to become

members.

A preliminary euchre tournament and dance will be held in the Southbridge Parish Hall on Thursday night, and it is intended to hold a series of five similar evenings at intervals of a fortnight, commencing from Wednesday, May 4. Aggregate prizes will be

given.

Last night's dance in the Lakeside Memorial Hall drew the largest attendance yet seen at any similar function held by the Hall Committee, and it was in every way a huge success. Music was Supplied by Maedonald's orchestra and Mr W. Mcllraith was M.C.

On the occasion of the euchre tournament and dance held at Southbridge on Saturday night in aid ,of the soft drinks and fruit stall at the Tennis and Bowling Bazaar, there was a very large attendance, the door receipts amounting to £10 7s 6d. The prizes were won as follows: — Ladies: Miss < Hill 1, Miss M. Nelson 2, Mrs Chapman consolation; gentlemen: Mr A. W. Strez 1, Mr W. Hutcheson 2, Mr J. D. McClure consolation. .

The president of the Ellesmere branch of the Farmers' Union has been notified of an intended visit to this district by Mr W. Grounds, chairman of the Dairy Control Board, who will give an address to dairymen. The date will most probably be Friday, April 29, but it is not yet.certain whether the meeting will be held in the afternoon or evening. The Farmers' Union will make an announcement as soon as th date and time are definitely settled.

Mr W.-- J. Day has acquired another large Minerva bus for the SoutkbridgeChristchureh service. Its seating capacity is practically the same as that of the Minerva he has had on the run for some time, but the chassis of the new one is underslung and the differential is quite silent. The engine is of- the sleeve valve type. To cope with tne I Easter traffic Mr Day brought the new vehicle out of the body builder *s works before the painting and fitting were completed. It will now have to go back for the final touches. People who have had a ride in the Minerva de luxe say that they have never experienced such comfort and silent running in any other passenger bus. Mr Day's keen enterprise and determination to maintain one of the best services in the Dominion deserve to be well rewarded,'
