BIG BAZAAR

OPENED THIS AFTERNOOtf.

CONTINUES TO NIGHT AND TO<

MORROW NIGHT,

Shortly before 3 o'clock this after* noon the big bazaar in aid of the Leeston tennis courts was officially opened by the county chairman, Mr J. Cunningham. A large quantity of home and farm produce, needlework and other goods, has been gathered together, and all the usual attractions are in evidence. There is every prospect of a substantial sum being raised. The Club hopes to have the support of all residents of the district who recognise the value of wholesome sport.

While Mr R. J. Gilbert was burning stubble on his farm between Doyleston and Lakeside on Wednesday afternoon the w-ind changed and took the flames to a straw stack, which was soon eft* veloped. A pig sty and several chains of fencing were destroyed before tho fire was stopped. The Leeston Fire BriIgade went out and assisted to prevent ithe fire from spreading.

Mr H. T. Stephens, of Brookside, has purchased from Messrs Morgan, Wat* son and Co., Ltd., through the firm's radio representative, Mr D. McKivett, "the large Radiola receiving set recently described in the Guardian. He is to be congratulated upon having become the owner of the best set at present in use in the county. By courtesy of Mr Stephens the Radiola set will be in operation at the bazaar to night and to-mor-

row night,

Many complaints have been made by motorists concerning the high tree fence at the College corner on the Springston-Lincoln road. There have been several narrow escapes at this corner in recent weeks and with the balance of traffic to and from Christchurch. there is bound to be a serious accident" if the fence is not cut down to a, height of not more than 4§ feet for a half chain length each way from the corner.
