Giant Telescope

The Lick Observatory on Mount Hum-, ilton in California, lias one of the finest telescopes in existence. It lias a glass 36 inches across, which was ground by an American, Allan Clarke, a man who began life as a portrait painter. -This was beaten by the Ycrkes telescope made for the University of Chicago; the lens, finished by Clarke a few weeks before his death, being 40 inches across. The tube is six feet long and the telescope weighs 75 tons. ■ Just before the war the Canadian Government had plans for the making of a most wonderful telescope. The mirror is to be six feet in diameter, and it is said that, after casting the lens, the glas> will take eight months to cool down be fore the mould can be opened. The cos' is reckoned at £13,000. Grinding and polishing a lens of this size takes many months of arduous work. The final touches are given with the human finger dipped in rouge.
