Taking Trout

BREACH OF FISHERIES ACT

E. Vinee, fisherman, of Doylcston, Avas charged at the Christchurch Magistrate 's Court on Wednesday, Avith having on February 7th, 1922, at Lake El lesmere, near the mouth of the Irwell, illegally taken trout by means of a net, contrary to the provisions of thc Fisheries Act, 1908, and the regulations made thereunder. Mr K. G. Archer, who appeared for thc North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, said defendant had been seen by the ranger fishing at Coe's Bay, on Lake Ellesmere, with a net. When he came ashore the boat was .searched and three trout Averc discovered? Fishermen were aloAA red to net flounders in the lake but they w-erc not allowed to come within three-quarters of a mile of the rivei mouth. Occasionally trout were net tec' outside the area, but Averc supposed tc; be put back. Defendant admitted having caught the trout w Tith a net, but sai'd he Avas fishing for flounders. The trout Averc dead when he took them out of the net, and it Avas no use putting them back in the water. A fine of £3 and costs w Tas imposed.
