BATTLE OF THE SHOW GROUND

On Monday evening at about 840 the , ordinary quietude of the C.V.C. camp was rudely disturbed by a well directed Tolley from the North End Plantation. The alarm was sounded and m a re markably short space of time (three minutes) the men fell m and the various ■quads doubled into position. A squad under Lieut H. D. Buchanan took up their position m the pig-pens, and fired several volleys at the attacking party, which could now be diotinctly seen m the clear moonlight working snake-like along the ground to take possession of a gully immediately fronting the pig-pens. la the meantime Lieut G. E. Eh odes, with another squad had taken up a position m the west side plantation, and Captain Bhodes defended the base, and was subsequently called upon to repel a small attack at the rear of the camp-. In the meanwhile Captain Dixon and some of the men of the E.M.R. (who constituted the attacking party) found Lieutenant Buchanan's volley firing far too strong, an I had to retire from the gully. "When back to their cover m the plantation Capt : Dixon worked his men round to the west ( ride, and soon cams m touch with Lieut Bhodes' squad and a punitive battle raged for some, time, m fact the combatants were now getting so excited and getting m such close proximity to one ano her, that they had to be repeatedly warned by their officers. Shortly after this the ammunition on both sides gave out, and " Cease fire' sounding, the battle of the Show Grounds was at an end.

Capt Dixon E.M.R., then marched m his men and was warmly welcomed by Captain Bhodes, CV C. A convivial evening was afterwards ap^nt.
