The C.V.C. Camp.

Notwithstanding the inclement and wintry weather on Sunday afternoon several visitors wended their way to the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry camp m the Leeston Show Grounds There are some fifteen tents," the ordinary military bell tent, and these when our representative looked through them were sprucely neat and clean, with plenty of straw. The officers' quarters are m the east end of the ground. 1 here are now three officers m camp, Captain R. HeatonRhodes, M.H.R., Lieutenants Bucha nan and G. E. Rhodes. The squadron m camp consists of some tnirty men, and Staff-Sergt Major Crespin is the instructor. Mr A. Rattray, of Christchurch, is m charge of the culinary department, and also the catering. The squadron mess m the large shed, and the officers have a cross table at the top. There are no horse lines, the horses being on this \ occasion yarded m the A & P Association's cattle peDS. : On Sunday afternoon the Ellesmere Brass Band, under the baton of Bandmaster Peters, played several j selections, which were much enjoyed by the visitors. Caterer Rattray's staff was m attendance with tea, aerated waters and light refreshments, for all those ladies who felt inclined for any. Since their advent into camp the C.V.C. have been doing some excellent work. Several interesting manoeuvres have been successfully carried out m a paddock, kindly placed at the disposal of the squadron by Mr Gilbert. On Saturday outpost work was done, and although the flat country hereabouts is not quite suited for this kind of drill, the' work was nevertheless satisfactorily j carried out. This (Wednesday) afternoon a programme of sports has been arrang cd to take place at the camp, a notification of which appears elsewhere. After dinner on Monday evening the Quartermaster Sergeant read the regimental orders for the following day and intimated that the officer commanding had been pleased to make the following promotion!: — Corporals Nutt and ActonAdams to be Sergeants, Lance Corporal Newbegin to be Corporal. The announcements were received with load applau3e. Captain R. Heaton-Rhodes then pretented Sergeant Acton-Adams with a marksman's badge and £1 note for beiog the best shot, not only m the C.V.C. but m five other regiments which had competed- The recipient was only one short of the possible.
