o (From our Uor respondent) . On Monday last, Mr Montgomery (the member for Ellesmere), with a number of other gentlemen, paid a visit to the goldfield on the Beach. He was shown over the field by Mr Zouch and his party. Mr Montgomery; obtained a sample of the sand containing the gold, and expressed a very favourable opinion of the Beach ; although admitting that he could do nothing m the way of getting a grant from the Government for developing the mine until a mining engineer has inspected the field and reported. Should the report be favourable, as it is anticipated it will be, Mr Montgomery will use his influence m getting the Government to assist m fluming the water along the Reach for sluicing purposes. * * # # • The Sedgemere Kingsley Club held the last of their meetings, for the present session m the School room on Tuesday evening, The attendance was good, but the threatening weather prevented several visitors from various parts of the district from attending. Mr Howaon was voted to the chair. The important question of, " Which is the better Government for the people of New Zealand, the Liberal or the Conservative," was debated ; Mr J. McMahon, supported by Mr H. Schnel, claiming th* Liberal Government to be the best, and Mr G. Whitelaw , supported by Mr J. McMillan (junr.), m favour of the Opposition. In the course of the debate, which was both interesting and lively, the good and evil legislation of both Governments were closely criticised. After the discussion a vote was taken, which resulted, by a majority of one or two votes, m favour of the Opposition. I
