CROMWELL.

(From our own correspondent!) There is very little to report re the mining and dredging industry here, the high river and travelling drift being responsible for the stoppage of the gorge dredges, and on the Clutha the drift militated against the returns of Shine 2 and the Rising Sun. Both these dredges are work' ing in the current, and are aftected by the drift considerably. Shine i resumed dredging on Wednesday night, and as the ground she is working is out of the current not much silt has accumulated in her old cut, • Now that the Rising Sun has dredged away the point, a strong current is now running alongside the bank of loam that caused so much trouble and is ’ carrying it away wholesale. When ever the dredge drops down to take up another cut there will be no loam to clog in her buckets. The cut has been extended another 50 yards and is now 200 yards wide. The returns from the Punt are getting poorer every > week. This dredge should never have been allowed to work into the Flat, she is too small and not powerful enough. Another of the fast diminishing band of the early pioneers of the Goldfields passed away on Wednesday in the person of Harry Wheiler who has resided in the district for many years and was highly respected. Wheiler was a native of Germany and was one oi a party of Germans who were the original prospectors of the Nevfs Goldfield. They struck rich gold on a terrace, which still goes by the name of German terrace, nearly opposite Commissioners Creek. Wheiler was 82 years of age at the time of his death.
