Bald Hill Flat

(From our own correspondent.)

Hard frost has set in now and the water is turned, out ol all the races for the winter. Returns from the Last Chance Co., although payable, have not come up to expectations. It is to be hoped lhat returns improve next spring, so that shareholders may reap a little benefit from their property.

A case was heard at the Warden’s Court, Alexandra, on Monday last, being the application of John Rivers, for cancellation of water rights held by John Plwing, in the Gorge, Coal an- 4 Obelisk Creeks. The Warden reserved his decision, which is waited for wi'h some interest.

A couple of travelling shows have lately given an entertainment here, and as it is some time since there has been anything of the kind have had fair audiences.

Our footballers have not been successful at the tournaments hold at Alexandra and Roxourgli. The players are nob at all satisfied with a d.-eision given by the referee at Alexandra, but accord ing to sora ; accounts they are often beat by the referee. Trapping is now over and I notice Mr Butler has the p. isoners at work < n his run- As the trapping has already thinned the rabbits < ut, they should lie scarce in the spring. The farmers must bo disposing of th : ir crops rapidly, as iho stockyards are beginning to look empty. Mr Butler is driving his chaffcuttcr with an oil engine which has proved a satisfactory power for this purpose. Mr Smith is clearing and fencing another portion of the rough ground oa his farm to pm dovtfn in turnips next spring. Fair returns of potatoes have been secured by growers here. About an asre grown by Mr Carroll gave a return of 10 tons.
