The ordinary monthly meeting of the trustees of the above institution held on Monday evening last, was attended by Messrs Edser (chair), Barry, Cuthbertson, Pitches and H. Stevens. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts for the month of December, amounting to £49 3s lid were passed for payment. The surgeon’s report which was read and received, showed : number of patients in hospital at beginning of month, 2 ; ein«e admitted, 5 ; discharged, 2 ; died, 2 ; remaining, 3. The secretary was instructed to arrange for the removal of Chin Puck Poo (an old and incurable Chinaman) to the Benevolent Institution. Annual Meet ng of Subscribers The annual meeting of subscribers to the Dunstan Hospital was held in the Clyde Library on Thursday afternoon, present Messrs C Hatton (chair), H. Partridge, J. McArthur, J. Wilson, W. C. Pitches, T. Barry, W. S. Laidlaw, F. Jeffrey, S. Stevens, H. Stevens, G. Faclie, J. Smart and Dr Hyde. The report of the trustees for the past year was read as follows: — “Your trustees in presenting their report for the past year have pleasure in saying that everything* pertaining to the institution has progressed in a most satisfactory manner. We would like however, as a to'<en of respect to the memory of our late confrere, Mr Edward McManus, to express our regret at the loss of his valuable services. We have pleasure in stating that the usefulness of the institution has been fully maintained, due in a great measure to what may truthfully he termed the elaborate care and strict attention given to Iheir respective duties by the medical, nursing and house staffs. Several operations of a complicated and serious nature have been performed during the year, at which the honorary medical staff gave their prompt and unstinted attention, therefore to them individually and collectively your Trustees would ask for a special vote of thanks by the contributors. The only special expenditure during the year has been „in connection with the telephone connecting the town with the institution, the which, we think, will be much appreciated, and the thorough distempering of the Hospital internally. This was a work called for by the Inspector of Hospitals, Dr Macgregor, and his subs. This work we are assured will add to the comfort and well being of the patients. The grounds round and about the Institution have come in for a good deal of attention, and add greatly to the comfort of the inmates. During the year, that is from 1/1/05 to 1/1/06, 51 patients were admitted, whilst four remained in from the previous year, accordingly 55 have been treated. The Jatients admitted were from—Alexandra 4, Alexandra district 5, Clyde 7, Blacks and Matakanui districts 13, Chafcto Creek 4, Cromwell district 4, Nevis 2, Dunedin 2. The number of da3’s stay was 1486, giving ah average of 27 days per patient. The Balance-sheet attached shows the receipts ami expenditure for the 9 months ended 31/12/05

On the motion of Messrs Jeffery and McArthur the report was received and the balance-sheet adopted. Mr Barry proposed— That it be a recommendation to the trustees to amend the rules re maintenance by contributors —that subscriber of 5s pay 25s weekly, of 10s pay 20s, of 20s 15s, non-subscribers 30s. —Seconded by Mr J. "Wilson. Dr Hyde, and Messrs Hutton, Jeffery, McArthur, Smart and Fache spoke against the motion. On a show of hands the motion was declared lost. On the motion of Mr Hutton a vote of thanks to the hospital staff for the very etlicient manner in which they had carried out their duties was passed. Mr C. C. Hutton was re-elected trustee. On the motion of Messrs Smart and S. Stevens a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring trustees. The usual compliment to the chair closed the meeting.
