The Debutante.
* News item.—lt lias been remarked by hostesses this year that many alleged girls have “ come out ’’ at several balls, both last season and this. The end of another season, And the last ball over and done, She sits by her mirror, yawning, And watches the rising sun. Its rays show up the wrinkles Last night with powder tilled, And gave light to the deadened eyeballs (Their own belladonna killed.) She takes out the teeth that glistened In smiles at the dance last night, And with stubborn, unwilling hairpins Her tired lingers light, Her hair-pad she releases And lays down its sinuous coils, Unclasps the paste-bright pendant That bony hollows foils. Wipes off the arching eyebrow That was raised in dainty scorn, Frases the coral liplets For men’s confusion born. Between tlie sheets site nestles, This debutante, hoary and sere, Sighing, “ There’s only one State left For me to come out in next year 1 ” —“ Punch.”
