Mining.

Answers to Correspondents.

Investor, Clyde.—The following are the directors of the Cairnmnir Gold Dredging Company:—L. D. Macgorge (chairman), Dr Hyde, and A. A. Olivet, Clyde . J. G Closs. Alexandra; E. Dunedin,

At a meeting of directors of the Monte Christo G. D. Company held "on (Saturday evening, it was decide i to dec are a dividend of 2s per sh re. When calls outstanding on new issue are paid up L4OO will be placed to a reserve fund. We are pleased to hear that the Vincent Exten ed has got on to payable wash. Although the return lor last week was only 13oz, we have every reason to believe that this weeK's return will show a decided improvement. The Cairnmuir, after working for a few days last week, was shifted further up stream, and is now about 440 yards from her top boundary. The dredge was stopped yesterday for examination by the •inspector, but resumed work the same night, . The Unity's return for last week, ]4oz is disappointing. The drift has been i we believe, very troublesome, but as the | liver is going down, this trouble will I doubtless cease. (

The Alpine Consols return for last week though showing a slight falling off, is satisfactory • J In our mining column last week we inadvertently stated that the Manor, bum dredge had closed down. It should have re.d Morning Star. An employer on the Cairnmuir dredge wrote last week pointing out an alle.ed injustice the crew were subjected to, viz., being unpaid for overtime. We find, after being shown the pay sheets, that his allegations are not correct. A fairly well attended meeting of dredgemen, was held in the H->rtly Armes Clyde, on Wednesday eveuing last. The' meeting had been convened by the Union and was really for ihe purpose of enrolling members. Mr Davidson (secretary of the Union) was in the chair, and after exp aining the inestimable benefits to be derived fiom being a unionist he asked those present to become members, though, at the same time, he said that he would not press anyone. A number of questions relative to dredging weie asked and duly answered by Mr Davidson. Mr VV. Holloway was appointed local secretary. Messrs Park, Reynolds, and Co. offered for sale by public auction on Thursday last, the Lhatto Creek claim and license 240 a, section 30, block VI, Tiger Hill district, 67 acres 7 poles ;and the steam dredge, as she now lies on the claim, Manuherikia River, about seven miles from Alexandra, together with ecpaipment, etc. The property was told, subject to a mortgage of £6lO, to the mortgagees for LlO.

following report of the Manuherikia Gold Di edging Company was ao opted at a meeting of shareholders on Thursday hst, for the period ended August 14: —" 13y referring to the pievious balance sheet it will be seen that the bank overdraft at the period stood at LI62G lis sd. which has since been paid off. There has also been paid towards the aredge account the sum of L 2423 lis lid, and after payinga dividend of LI2OO there remains a balance in bank 0fL332 18s lid. The di edge started work in August last, and whilst the river was low obtained very good results. An excessive rise in the river, however, during May and June caused dredging operation* for a time to be suspended ; but since dredgiug has been lesumed the returns have been highly satisfactory, it is confidently expecte.i, therefore, that under oidinary conditions of the river shanho.ders may now look forwai d to a continuance of dividends. The dredge it in first-class order, and is well adapted for the work she was designed to undertake. Dui ing the past week new plates have been put on to the Vincent screen. Although we have had no official infoi mation on the subject we are inclintd to think that this means that the dredge will resume. That a numLer of- local shareholders arc anxious to give the dredge a further trial, and to put mo; e money into the company, we know, and we have good reason to beiieve that this wi'l eventuate. The directors have been communicated with by more than one local shareholder, with a view to dropping the dredge below the biidge, where it is believed payable gold will be found. The Monte christo is keeping up her reputation as a consistent gold winner. Her last week's return of G2oz odd proves conclusively that a j.ood seam of wash has beui struck, and not oidy a patch, as some local w.seacres imagined, On resumme at the beginning of the week, the paddock was found to be full of drift, and it w»s really Wednesday before the dredge got properly going. In view of this fact, the return may be considered highly c-atisfactoiy. Under any ciicumstances, however, (i'2o? should satisiy anybody,

The Boundary Creek his we believe, shut down indefinitely. So far the dredge has boen unable to bottom, and consequently the ladder will require to be lengthened. It is probable that the ladder of the Kelly and Casey dredge will be lengthened; Where the-bottom has been touched, good gold his been found to exist. Though only able to bottom in some places, the dredge is working steadily. The Half-way House will pr bably resume work to-day.

The Great Central is working steadily. The work of dismantling the old Alpine is now in hand. The boiler and several smaller pieces of machinery have been taken off, and it is hoped that the rest of the machinery will be removed before the river rses

The Mat an worked steadily last wek, and despite the t. avelling drift succeeded in keeping np to her average return. This week's teturn will be considerably effected owing to the fact that di edges have to stop" for inspection, which will necessitate the loss of at least a day. To our minds it seems a rather arbitary law, which compels practically new dredges, like the Boundary Creek, Cairnmnir, and Monte Christo, to have to cool down for inspection.

SUMMARY OF OTAGO RKIURNR

The fo'lowing table (compiled by the 'Otago Daily Times') shows the gold returns from.the dredges in Otago whose returns are made public since the beginning of the present yea-, with the return for the corresponding period of last yea: -

CARIRNMUIR G. D. 10,

The following is the second annual report to be presented to the shareholders at the Annual meeting to be held in the registered office ot the company, Suns derland street, Clyde, on Saturday, the 14th September, 1 goi, at 8 p.m. —When meeting you last year, your directors then assumed that the dredge would have been completed and di edging commenced at or about the beginning of the current year, but what with de laj's in the delivery of parts of the machinery, and from certain defects in the plans; also in the construction of the pontoons; the time was considerably extended. Ihe abnormally high level the river maintained till late in the season also helped, consequently it was not until well on in July a start was effected. The returns of gold so iar obtained -from 150Z to 230Z per week—though payable are not quite up to expectations, and with the view of obtaining better a shift higher up the claim has, been made, and strong hopes are entertained of an improvement (it may here be explained that a start was made on the lower boundary, but, though a depth of iully 50ft was reached, no bottom was touched.) The dredge now completed in its every part gives satisfaction, but the cost was a great deal more than was anticipated Messrs Ackroyd and Iryde on a ballot retire from the directory^,

and beinjeligible, offer themselves for re-election. Messrs Stevens and Hutton, the auditors, also offer themselves for re-election. The following is the balance*

PROFIT AND LOSS

UPPER KAWARAU

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT),

G. M'Lean, manager of the Merrimac, has beeu fined 5 s for employing firemen without certificates on his dredge. A curious story ie reported from the Meg aud Annie dredge. The dredgemaster, engineer, and four of the men were disn.isseii, apparently without any reason. The tables have been housed in, and the entrances to them locked. The local director washes up every Saturday, thus relieving the dredgemaeter from that responsibility.

2 Mr Jfl, M'Donald, late of the Ngapara No. 2 dredge, Nevis, has been appointed manager oi the Meg and Annie. The Second 4 Magnetic is working away Bteadily in a calm stretch of river. Jtier return last week was 520z.

'Jht site for the pontoons of the Gold Chair dredge has been completed. The Magnetic and Ranfurly dredges are working away steadily, with good results.

The Inspector of Machinery has been around here inspecting the toilers on the dredges

ALEXANDRA

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONBENT.)

There is nothing special of note to chronicle this week in regard to dredging. The returns in this vicinity aro on the average, considered fair. The gorge dredges were not working during the week, but wi)l resume work to ni-ht (Suuday.) The Moa had the misfortune to break the crown wheel last Monday raorniqg, A new one arrived on Friday afternoon and was put in position on Saturday. There is some talk about putting another dredge on this claim and one that will dredge to a lo>ver depth tnan the present one.

The Eureka has shifted down to the lower end of her claim and is now operating on the west bank. The Perseverance No 2 with 54 z lOdwt is on the same good mu of wash that she picked up wheu she started on her new claim, This Coys No 1 dredge is shifting down to the bottom iw order to take another etit.

DREDGING RETURNS,

WHAT TO DO UNTIL THE DOCTOR ARRIVES.

It is very hard to stand idly by and see our dear ones suffer whi'e awaiting the arrival of the loctor. An Albany (N.Y.) dairyman called at a drug store there for a doctor to come and see his child, then very sick with croup. Not finding the doctor in, he left word for him to come at once on his return. He also bought a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Kern' dy, which he hoped would give some relief until the doctor should arrive. In a few horns he returned, saying the doctor need not come, as,the child was much better. The druggist, Mr Otto Scholz, says the f .mily has since reccommended Chamberlain's Cough Remedy to their neighbors and friends until he has a constant demand for it from that part of the country. For sale by B. Naylor Clyde, and James Rivers, Alexandra.

CHRONIC DIARRHOEA CURED.

My mother suffered with chronic diarrhoea for several months. She wa6 attended by two physicians who at last pronounced her case hopeless. She procured one 25-cent bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, and Lvo doses gi.ve her permanent rel'ef. I take pleasure in recommending it as the best in the market.—Mis F. E. Watson, Aiken, Ala. Sold by B. Naylor, Clyde, nd James Rivers, Alexandra.
