LONDON, November 11. The P. and O. Company’s steamer Arabia was successfully launched at Greenock yesterday. The ‘ Chronicle 1 states that the Amalgamated Society of Engineers have joined the Engineering Trades Federation. Colonel H. P. Northcote, of the Leinster Regiment, who served with the Ashantee expedition in 1895 is to command the expedition to the Gold Coast hinterland. Major Lugard will operate inland from Lagos towards Boussa. The latter town is the destination of the gunboats recently despatched. Eleven hundred of Colonel Northcote’s carriers have revolted, owing to the lack of beef rations, and have returned to Capo Coast Castle. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Licutenant-colonol R. B. Adams (of tho Indian Staff Corps), Viscount Fincastle (aide-de-camp to Lord Elgin and lieutenant of 16th Queen’s Lancers), and Lieutenant E. W. Costello (wing officer of the 22nd Punjab Infantry) for bravery in the Swat Valley campaign. Costello was wounded in the attack by the tribesmen upon the British camp at Malakand, but took part in repelling the second attack next day, when he displayed great bravery. Adams won the coveted distinction in the fighting round Landokai. He endeavored under heavy fire to savo Lieutenant Greaves, who was wounded. Viscount Fincastle, whose horse was shot under him, came to Lieutenant-colonel Adams’s assistance, and while Adams faced a party of swordsmen single - handed Viscount Fincastle guarded Greaves until relief arrived. Speaking at Acton (Middlesex) Lord George Hamilton said that the policy of the Government with regard to the campaign on the north-western frontier of India was to accept a general submission on the part of the enemy, to interfere with the tribesmen as little as possible, and to concentrate the strength of the British forces in positions essential for the fulfilment of Great Britain’s obligations.
