THE LAKES DISTRICT.

— o — (from our correspondent. ) Abrowtown, July 20. The resignation of our member (Mr. B. Hallenstein) of his seat in the General Assembly has taken everybody by surprise. Such an unexpected event was never contemplated, especially at a time when the interests of the Wakatip demanded his presence at Wellington. For all practical purposes this district will bo unrepresented during the present Session, as no election of a new member can bo made in time to be of any service to us. The reason given by Mr. Hallenstein is that his private business demands more of his time- a f-ict pretty well understood ; and, however übiquitous Mr. Hallenstein may be, to one occupied so extensively in trade, how be ever found time to engage in politics at all Is a nutter for wonder, especially when the pursuit of them demanded his presence at Wellington. Some say that Mr. Hallenstein, having obtained all that he wanted, has left us in the lurch to shift for ourselves ; but, so far as 1 can see into the matter, he has got nothing, for reason that there was nothing to get, and a gentleman in Its position was not likely to bo a place-hunter, as he could not possibly want a billet. That Mr. Hallenstein has done wrong to his constituents in resigning there can bo 'no doubt, and he should not have undertaken a duty which he could not find time to fulfill lean only suppose, and, perhaps, the whole truth of the affair is that Mr. Hallenstein very probably permitted himself to ho persuaded into the performance of a duty which he had neither time nor inclination to follow out. The probable candidates are Mr. K. Manders, Mr. O. B. Barton, Mr. Vincent Pyko, Mr. Robert Clark, M.P.C., Mr. IT. S Fish, jun., and Mr. A. limes, late M. P.C. Of the chanc-s of these gentlemen I may, perhaps he -°.hle to give an idea. Mr. Manders certainly deserves some public recognition of his services, hut I am much afraid that his persistent offering himself whenever there is an election is a sort of monomania; to offer and be rejected so many times and on so many occasions as has been the case with Mr. Manders requires something more than human fortitude and perseverance. Mr. G. B. Barton is doubtless a clever man, but 1 fancy he has scarcely been sufficiently long among us to bo powerfully supported, while, at the same time, the miners are opposed to gentlemen of the long robe. Mr. Vincent Pyke is but little known up here, and Ido not hear anything urged in his favor. Mr. Robert Clarke might have been successful had he not have opposed the Arrow in the matter of the Morvcn Ferry Bridge ; but, having so sold his Arrow constituents, he posses no chance whatever. Mr. H. S. Fish, jun., is looked upon favorably as being a clever man, and I should not at all wonder, if he plays his cards well, to see him elected. A Dunedin man, and one occupying a good position, will, to my fancy be the successful candidate. Mr. A. Innes is much respected in the Arrow-district, hut his long connexion with Mr. Hallenstein will tell against him. Should no other candidate come forward, it is between him and Mr. Fish that the election will in all probability lie. Perhaps Mr. Fish may take it as a good omen that the finny tribe have already established themselves in Lake Wakatip, and, perhaps, some larger, more enterprising 1 and übiquitous fish may do so likewise in the good graces of the electors of the district.
