TO TIIE EDITOR Of THE DUNSTAN TIMES. Clyde, 23th November, 18tSG. Sik,^—Having failed to get a public-meeting together last evening, for the purpose of hearing from the Stewards what money was being expended on the Race-course, and why we, residents of Clyde, should not have an equal chance with strangers, to give in a price for any contract connected with the couiese. Not one of the Stewards appeared, for obvious reasons ; we fully intended hearing their explanation, and if the one or two had the power, to give to any one without publicity whatever, contract or contracts, and sum they choose, then we should have been obliged to be satisfied. They will not attend a meeting and give an answer—perhaps they will through your columns, for I am satisfied mo3t of the Subscribers to the Dunstan District Race Fund, would be as well satisfied by open competition for any contracts, as leaving it solely in the hands of one or two members of the Jockey Club. Let the resident as well as non-resident men have an equal chance, fair and open competition and no favoritism. But unfortunately, the jealousy amongst many of our tradesmen—one must ask his neighbour if he may do and so, or their custom is at once taken away. Last evening I asked a tradesman for the loan of a chair for the meeting, he said, I would rather not, I might offend some one—we must agree with our would-be great men whether it is our own money or other peoples. They are doing their utmost to drive the few mechanics and working-men from the town. Buildings and contracts of every description are given to strangers—at the same time they expect you to lay out your money with them—complaining of the bad times. Your inserting this would greatly oblige, as we might yet learn why the resident men of the town were excluded from giving a price for work on the course. Yours respectfully, One of the Promoters of the Meeting.
