Hawke's Bay Mounted Rifles

The first annaal prize-firing of the Hawke's Bay Mounted Rifles was held at the Tβ Mata range yesterday, under the command of Captain A. H. Russell, all the officers being present. The day was windy and changeable, and this affected the shooting to some extent. The introduction of a ladies' event added greatly to the interest of the day. The range was at 200 yards, with a two-foot bull. The highest score, made by Mrs C. Hughes, came within one of the possible, 25, and the lowest scorer made 19, so that the ladies shot better in proportion than the men. It must, however, be remembered that the men had to shoot at 8-inch bulls, and at no shorter range than 300 yards. The interest taken in the corps by the citizens is shown by the large number of really valuable and useful prizes donated. Besides Messrs Land and Heighway's champion belt, Lieut. Gordon gave a solid massive silver goblet, Mr Mason Chambers £] 0 in cash, and the other prizes were proportionately valuable. The shooting went" off without a hitch, and a very pleasant day was spent, concluding with an equally pleasant impromptu social concert, at which the prizes were handed to the winners by Mrs A. H.
