SHOOTING.
Napier Guards.
The Napier Guards' annual prize-firing eventuated on the Tutaekuri range yesterday, but was somewhat marred by the westerly gale which blew with hurricane force during the best part of the day. About midday when the markers were endeavoring to erect the 6 by 6 targets, the wind came on exceptionally strong, with the result that both targets collapsed, necessitating using single targets in front of the mound, and thereby delaying the shooting to a very great extent. This resulted in some men having to shoot practically in the dark, in fact seme had unfortunately to drop out. The last shot, was fired just prior, to 7.30 p.m. The same gust of wind which levelled the targets also brought the marquee down, and an impromptu one had to be erected.
Under the circumstances the shooting was not really first-class. Lieutenant Forsythe, with 30 at 300 yds, was the only man to top the standard at any range. Private Howard's 30 at 500 was also a good score in the A Class. Private Waters with 26 at 300 yds was the best scorer in B Class.
The special match for ladies attracted e'even competitors. Although one or two failed to get on a good score, this was compensated for by the exceptional score of the winner, Miss Mole, who was loudly cheered when she registered her fifth bull's-eye. Shortly afterward Captain Kettle, in a few happy remarks, presented the lady prize winners with the following prizes : —Miss Mole, Ist, Mr S. McLernon's trophy ; Miss Cullen, 2nd, Mr A. J. Williams's trophy; Miss Riggir, 3rd, Mr W. Reading's trophy. The thanks of the corps are due to a ! number of ladies for helping with the refreshments, which were heartily appreciated.
