CRICKET.
.A pleasant holiday match was played on the Recreatiou Ground yesterday between teams- representing the Rivals and Awatoto Olubs. Rtvate, batciug first, made a very poor beginning, 7 wickets v falling with only 43 runs recorded, but aM better complexion was put on affairs td*/, wards the close, and 79 appeared before the last wicket fell, the double figure contributors being Yates (31), Nightingale (10), and Smyrk, sen. (not out 19).' Thawley bowled well throughout, taking 6 wickets for 34 runs, Delehanty 2 for 19, Hillson 1 for 18, Maunsell 1 for 5. Awatoto, although not shaping very well with their earlier batsmen, came better towards the close of the innings, which realised 144, due mainly to the effort of Maunsell (who played neat cricket for 67 not out after an easy i let off before he had reached doublefigures), and Hillson, the last wicket,, who hit-out vigorously for 29. Leevera (12), Hawthorne (12), and Smith (11), also reached double-figures. Nightingale was the best ot the Rivals' bowlers with 5 for 44, Elms 2. for 17, McDonald 1-for 19, Yates 1 for 37. Rivals made a weak display in their second effort with the bat, being all dismissed for 55, (Yates 11, McDonald 11). Thawlej waa ■■ again the most successful fcrundler," with 4 for 24, Aldridge 3 for 16, Wrightson 2 for 8. Awatoto thus won by an innings and 4 runs. The Hawke's Bay " Wanderers" played the Wanganui Club at Wanganui on Christmas and Boxing Days. The wicket was soft, and the bowlers had the benefit. The visitors scored 129 and 64, and the l Vanganui men 40 and 121, the game ! therefore resulting in a win for the former by 32 runs. Deut was very deadly with the ball, and in Wangauui'e first innings secured 6 wickets for 10 runs, Gardiner capturing the other 4. ' ■;' In the Cauterbury-Otago repiesentative< match, played ab Dunedin, the former won by 125 runs. Canterbury made 199* and 96, and Otago 97 and 73. An unusual incident occurred in Canterbury's second innings. Harman was bowled by Fiaher, and left the crease, but the urn ■- —' pire had not seen it. Instead of appealing to the other umpire who had, he gave it not out, when Geddea, removing the bails, appealed far a run out, which was. granted, as Harman was half-way tothe pavilion. In the cricket match Victoria v New South Wales the latter, in their first innings, made 153 —Gregory not out 66, Trumpet 26. Victoria's first innings resulted in 154—M'Leod 46, Stuckey not out 26 New South Wales' second innings closed for 126 —Trumper 26, Noble 56. Victoria in their second innings frafe lost 5 wickets for 42 —Graham 14. The annual match between Tomoana and Waipukurau was played at Waipukurau on Boxing Day. The game resulted in a win for Waipukurau. The visitors seemed to be at sea on the Waipukurau ground, the ball getting up very much. Several of the players were severely hit. However, it was a good game, and all enjoyed themselves right royally. The hospitality shown by the ladies and gentlemen of Waipukurau was much appreciated. Waipukurau batted first and put up 83, D. Poits batting well for 29. In their second innings they made 166, F. Sharpin and Bailey making a good stand, 65 and 34. Mclvor and Wilkinson also batted well for Waipukurau. The " Tomoana men could only put up 51 in the first attempt and 83 in the second, Owen, Smart, and Spence making double figuies. Steed and Sharpin bowled best tor Waipukurau and the honors were equally divided among the Tomoana bowlers.
