Short Rations.
Trooper E. Krogh, writing from Pretoria under date June 7th' says :*— I suppose by the time you get this the war w ill be over, as the Boers are giving up their guns in hundreds. We won't oare
how soon it ends, as we have Shad a hard lot of fighting. I have nearly forgotten what it is like to sleep in a bed, as we have camped in the open for quite two months. Rations are scarce at times and we have had to be content with two biscuits for three days, when we came through Pretoria I was so hungry ; that I bought a loaf, a pound of butter, and a tin of sardines, for which I paid ten shillings.
