Carpenters' and Joiners' Dispute.

The Arbitration Court this afternoon pay» its award m the carpenters' and builders' dispute. The following are the main poirvs of the award:—That 45 hours constitute a week's work. During the winter months half an hour is to be allowed for luncheon, and all the year round work is to cease on Saturday at a quarter to twelve. Journeymen carpenters and joiners to receive not less than Is 4d per hour, and wages to be paid weekly. Except ia respect of stair building no carpenter or joiner shall be paid by piece ■work, nor shall any builder or em- < ployer sub-let his work, labor only. All overtime work and work on statutory holidays and Labor Day shall be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter for the first two hours, and time and a-half after the first two hours. Any workman who considers himsplf not capable of earning the full rate of wages allowed to journeymen under the award may be paid such lees wage as may be arranged between the union and his employers. The proportion of such men shall not exceed one to every three fully paid journeymen. All boys shall be apprenticed by deed either to learn a part:cular branch or the trade generally. If to learn one branch only he slull be bound for four years ; if for more than one branch five year.". Preference of employment was granted to members of the union on th« usual conditions set by the Couit in its recent decisions. The TJ.S.S. Co. -were exempted irom the operations of the preference clause. The president of the Carpenters' Society expressed dissatisfaction with the award. The Court has just now finished its -sittings in Wellington. Since May 25th the Arbitration Court lias travelled all over the colony and dis■posed of forty-nine cases.
