RACING CONFERENCE.
[per pbkss association.] Wellington, This da v. TheHou. Messrs Carroll and Ward attended the Racing Conference this morning. On the motion of Sir George Clifford, a vote of thanks was passed to tha Hon. Mr Carroll for the manner in which he had advanced the interests of racing during his term of ofHce as Colonial Secretary.—Mr. Carroll said he thought the country was to be congratulated upon the good ivork the conference had done in the interests of the purity of the turf, and the markedly improved state of racing.—Mr Ward said it would be his endeavor to intelligently co-operate with the conference in attending to the requirements of racing throughout the colony in a fair and impartial manner. He would always be largely guided by the decisions ot the conference. With regard to the permit question, he thought the present limit of allocation by law was a mistake, and that it would be better to adopt a system under which allowance could be made for the growth of districts. Sir George Clifford referred to the proposal for the Government inspection ■of totalisators, and said he felt sure they all would be delighted if any Government official would inspect the totalisator workingand accounts. Such an inspection would add to popular confidence in the work of the machine. Mr Ward remarked that complaints had been made to the Government of money having been rung on to the machine by a certain club after the start of a race.
Sir George Clifford was re-elected chairman of the conference.
A motion that the proprietors of totalisators shall not- be deemed officials of racing ciubg within the meaning of Rule 5 was lost.
It was decided to impose a flue of £2 for every time a horse is started in a race under a name not registered by the conference, and a tine of £5 if an unregistered name is knowingly used.
A uniform hurdle of 3ft 6in high was adopted for the whole of the colony.
