A four days' bowling tournament, at wliich the championship of Australia will be decided, will be held at Melbourne the first week in November. The tournament, the first prize for which is £50, is open to amateur members of any club in the world.

' Actuated by highly creditable motives Mr Cranbyye?terday and to-day collected the sum of twenty pounds from among a few of the kindly disposed, which he has handed to Captain Hughes, of the lost barquentine Elizabeth Price, recently ■wicked at Long Point, The captain and crew leave by the. Zealandia to-night for Auckland.

At nine o'clock this morning the thermometer readings at the places mentioned were as follows : — Russell 51, Auckland 51, Gisborne 52, Spit 46, Wanganui 39, Wellington 36, Christchurch 46, Bealey 20, Dunedin 45, Invercargill Bluff 45. The reading in Napier at 9 a.m. was 48 in the shade.

The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. have received the following cablegram from their London office, dated '* 19th inst.':—" Tallow : There is a better demand for medium and common qualities, but other descriptions are unchanged. Medium and inferior mutton tallow have advanced 3d per cwt since last report,"

A heavy sea was rolling in the bay last night, breaking over th& Marine T>urado wall in places and carrying considerable quantities of shingle with it. The force of the water dashing through the scupper holes in the wall had the effect of tearing tip small portions of the asphalt footpath opposite the bluff near the breakwater, and at the same place the road this morning was covered with shingle. _ The damage done is, however, of a trifling nature.

The local wool brokers held their •usual periodical eale yesterday, when good catelogues were offered, comprising 111 bales and 55 packages of wool, 6011 sheepskins, 524 hides, and 46 packages of fat. There was a good attendance of the local buyers, and prices were firmer for both wool and sheepskins, which were cleared at full market rates ; hides and tallow, however, were easier. The following were the prices obtained :—Wool —Catalogues chiefly comprised crutchings and stragglers' fleeces. Crossbred fleece sold up to 4|d, crutchings from 2|d to 4d, crossbred dead 4| : '3,_ scoured half-bred 9|d crossbred Bd, pieces sd. Sheepskins.—Crosabred from 2|d for short-woolled up to for better class, fine crossbred to hogget from 2|d to 4Jd, pelts 3d to Is each. Hides.— Medium weight ox sold from to 4£d, lighter 2f-d to 3Jd, superior cow up to 3£d, station saved from 2-jj-d to 3£d, yearlings 3fd, calf 3fd to 3-Jd per lb ITallow.— Only station packages offered. Rough sold up to l|d, rendered Hu , per lb.
