Sydney, April 20. The chief examiner of the coal fields, giving evidence on the Dudley disaster, attributed the explosion to the naked light carried by Hetherington coming in contact with the gas. It was a mistake to stop the fan when no miners were working in the mine. Had it been kept going constantly the chances were the explosion would have been reduced greatly. Melbourne, April 20.
The question of facilitating the despatch of English mails from Adelaide is receiving attention. When the steamer misses the express it delays the mails till the next day's train, caueing great inconvenience to the eastern colonie3. It not infrequently means missing a New Zealand steamer. It is now proposed to despatch a special train if the express has gone, the cost to be borne by Victoria, Ufeff Bouth Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
