The Times adverts to tho proposal to guarantee the notes on issue in Sydney as benefiting some creditors at tbe expense of others, and thinks any such legislation can only be harmful. Owing to the recent failures, tho final liquidation of iho Federal Bank may be deferred for threo years. A call on the shareholders is probablo. Shares in the Queensland National Bank .are now unquotable. The petition of Mr H. Guioness, praying for the compulsory winding up of the Commercial Bank, has been adjourned to May 16th. Tho question was raised whether, kjiDg an Australian company, the Court could interfere. The Court made the usual order for winding up the English and Scottish Bank. London Chartered Bank shares rose £1 yesterday, and some were sold at £7 10s. City men consider the bank ought to be reconstructed, as the business is sound. The failure caused no surprise in Edinburgh, where tho local deposits amount to half a million, but there was considerable excitement at Glasgow, where tha deposits are about the same.
