ROWING.

GISBORNE B.C. V. NAPIER R.C,

GISBORNE AGAIN DEFEATED,

The above annual fixture was rowed on the Inner Harbor this morning in perfect water. Both boats got away to a splendid start, Gisborne, with the inside water, showing to the front at once, and getting a lead of half a length, they held for the first half-mile. They were rowing a very dashy stroke, getting their hands away smartly, and all swinging well together, but their slide work was a little faulty. At the half-mile Hutchinson's steady beefy stroke and superior weight began to tell, and he started catching them up. The boats were level at the gut (one mile), and presented a pretty sight, both orews rowing right out. Sandlant here made a brave effort to hold his own, but it was not to be. Hutchinson's crew, improving at every stroke, took a commanding lead, which they maintained to the finish, winning by quite four lengths. Time, 14min 50sec. Gisborne finished with a plucky spurt. They are to be complimented on their rowing, and in lighter boats would indeed be a very warm crew. Their stroke is a fine oarsman, and rowed a splendid race. The race was rowed in ten seconds faster time than the Union R.O. fixture. Mr J. G. Hughes acted as starter and judge. The following were the crews :— napieb (black and white). 0. H. Cato, 9at 81b .. bow \ J.I. Cato, list 31b ..2 I , S. L. D. Pattison, 12st ..3 ( F. L. Hutohison, list 31b stroke/ oisbobnb (blaok and gold). Green, 9st Blb .. .. bow \ Hennessey, lOat 31b .. 2 f « Nesbitt, 10st41b .. .. 3 ( Sandlant, 1 Oat Gib.. .. stroke I F. Jago was the Napier cox and Muir for Gistorne. To-morrow the Poverty Bay, Union, and Napier Clubs will meet, using the new boats presented to tho town clubs by Mr S. H. Gollan. This race will be worth going a long way to see. The Poyerty Bay and tho Union Club will be represented by heavy and powerful crews, while the Napier crew, although wanting in weight, are very fit, and will take a lot of beating.
