LIBEL ACTION.
Mr Ballance contemplates legal proceedings against tho Waikato Times, on account of certain reflections rocently made upon him in that journal in connection with native land matters. THE AOED AND INKIEiI. A deputation from tho Presbyterian Church of tho colony was introduced to the Premier by Mr Downie Stewart yesterday, and urged him to give exemption from the property tax to the Aged and Infirm and Widow and Orphans' Fund. The Premier promised to consider the matter carefully. TRUST FUNDS. Tho Public Accounts Committee have carried a motion to tho effect that in future tho investment of trust funds aud Savings Banks deposits shall by controlled by a Board instead of by the Government. TUB RIGHT OF VETO. Tho Premier has informed Mr Fulton that the Government will probably bring in a Bill next session giving the people tho right of veto in connection with licensing matters. FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE RILL.
A deputation of underwriters interviewed Mr. Stewart this morning in connection with his clause in tho Fire and Marino Insurance Companies Bill. They approve of, the proposals to have uniformity of conditions on policy forms, but are apparently afraid that foreign companies may object that some-onesided ccudit'ons may bo inserted by tbe Govornor-in-Council. TRUST FUNDS. The Premier, though he at first opposed the resolution of the Public Accounts Commission as to the handing of tho Post Office Savings Bank funds over to a Board for investment, has now- agreed to it, and. will embody it in a Bill for introduction this session. Mr Larnneh intends to move at a meeting of the Commission that no trust funds Bhall for the future bo invested in Haibor Board securities.
