TOWN EDITION.

Dr. Preston has taken passages for himself and family in tho P. and O. Company's steamer Ballarat, leaving Melbourne on September 20th.

We hear that Mr. Eraser, from the colony of Victoria, has been appointed manager of the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales, and will arnvo here at an early dato.

A very successful rehearsal of tho cantata " Under the Palms" was held in Trinity Church last evening, the choruses going iv capital style. The piece is to bo given next week, and promises to meet with much success. The Free Mothodists give a coffee supper to-morrow evening, and as thoy have established quite a reputation in this line, and an evening with them is always spent pleasantly, there is suro to be a large attendance. The first dance of tho second term under tho auspices of the La Mascotto Quadrille Assembly will take place in tho Theatre Royal to-morrow night, when a largo attendance is oxpeoted, many who havo not attended hitherto having signified their intention of being present. Wo understand that tho Harbor Board havo been informed that certain persons aro in tho habit of pulling grass from the banks erected mi the edge of the lagoon between the Shamrock Hotel and Napier, and thus causing considerable damage. It will ho seen that a notice has been inserted in our advertising columns that all persons trespassing 011 the banks will be prosecuted. We should, therefore, strongly advise such persons who aro in the habit of pulling grass from the banks to desist from the practice, as they have already been reported to tho Harbor Board officials.
