The Premier carried his tea duty yesterday, and now it stands at Gd per lb, instead of •Id. Tho twopence dif.er.nco 'will, probably, not bo felt, for tea has become so much cheaper of late through the introduction of Indian teas. Tha principle of the extra tax is what wo think tho people havo the most right to complain against. Tho 2d extra is wanted to supply subsidies to local bodies to supx>leineut their revenues; in otbor words, to allow thoso bodies to avoid increasing their rates. Now the revenues of County Councils and Road Boards aro dorived from rates levied on land and houso property, so that tho 2d extra on tea has been imposed to save that description of property from increased taxation. Wo aro glad to see that Messrs Ormond, Tanner, Smith, and Captain Ru_s.ll votod against the tea duty. Messrs Ormond and Tanner wore not in tho House when tlio division took place, but thoy paired against the resolution.
