JUMP JIM CROW.
Our readers are aware of the profound sensation Mr J. M. S. Mackenzie created in' the House when he quoted from. Sir Robert; Stout's littlo pamphlet on political economy,, but Mr Mackenzie's exact words have, not been published in any Hawke's Bay paper. Here they are:—"The House knows that I have a weakness for giving authorities in support of my own arguments, and to-; night, sir, I intend to give the House an, authority it seldom hears in this connection,; an authority against taxation and against! Protection — whom hon. members know; well, and yet whom they never hear quoted.. Do hon. members see this inaignQjcant-; looking thumb-worn pamphlet ?■ Jjlttle do j they think what a store of wisdom it con-; tains, and of sound economy. (Here the: speaker held it up so that the Horie should! see it, and read out, with groat emphasis,: the following passage) : —' Political economy, has been neglected and wantonly thrown: aside, and in the latter days its throwing' aside, is only justice for the benefit of the : laborer. Thero is no maxim that admits of more abundant proof than that a country's weal cannot be increased by taxing its inhabitants.' ' The disciple of liberty says that in a society, social organism, or Govern-; ment, all that should be done by the State is to maintain equal freedom. What equal freedom is that which would assert the right; to tax another to benefit His neighbor ? • Yet--what are poor laws and protection systems, doing but this ? What are they but a: species of robbery Jjy the arm of the law ?'; Can it boj sir, that I wroto this pamphlet' myself ? No, sir; it was written by a much; more eminent and better known man; by a man who would seem a sound economist,' and a most consistent politician—it bears on the title page the name of Robert Stout." ,
