NOTES BY "HIPPO."
On reading over the N.Z. Referpo I, see that; Mr Allen M'Lean is there reported.as having purchased tho American imported trotting mare Blue Grass Belle, Queon Emma, and a foal by Berlin—Queen Emma. This is altogether a mistake. Mr M'Lean, who was on his return from Canterbury, brought up Bluo Grass Belle and a colt foal by Berlin—Fanny Belle for Mr-. Douglas, M'Lean, of Maraekakaho, and not a foal by ■ Berlin out of Queen Emma as reported by the Referee. The mare and foal were safely: brought to. Hastings yesterday. The mare is the grandest stamp of an American trotting- mare that it is possible to conceive, and the colt, which is dark brown, is a very promising youngster, and is said to take mi appearance after his sire, who is reported to be .the-grandest looking trotting sire ever brought to these colonies. The' fact of the horse being 17 years old and having brought 275. guineas at the late Robert Walker's saie, speake much for him. Mr Douglas McLean is, to be congratulated in having obtained, such a valuable maro and colt at so low a figure, the marc being . heavy in foal to Berlin. In the , same paragraph the Referee states that Mr Allan McLean had engaged H. Ward to trainhishorses Soudan and other youngones. Ward only comes' to assist .Mr -McLean's etud groom, and not to train his horses, he having some time since parted with all his interest in Soudan. •• ;
