HIGH SCHOOLS.
[to tub editob.]
Sik, —I do not know what must have been the state of Mr Sutton's mind when he penned the letter which appears in your issue this evening. It must not have been a happy one. To say that my letter, pubby you on Tuesday, conveyed " the outrageous charge that the pupils of the Napier High Schools cost the Government a very largo sum per annum," is certainlymaking an outrageous statement. I never mentioned the Napier High Schools, nor did I even imply that they cost the Government a very large sum per annum, My statements were with regard to High Schools in general. If the Napier High Schools do not participate in the revenues derived from endowments, so much the worse for the others. But then we have only Mr Sutton's word for it. I don't think that public documents will support him. If lam wrong in my statements, I shall be pleased to be set right. I wish tho question at issue to be discussed on its merits, without side issues or subterfuge. There is ample information available, and we are all interested as parents and. as colonists. I cannot agree with Mr Sutton when he questions " the propriety of one of the Board's officers taking such a peculiar course as the Inspector has done." What have High Schools to do with Education Boards ? Mr Sutton would answer nothing !So do I. Having nothing to do with High Schools any more than I have to do with Mr Sutton's sheep, why may I not deal with a subject to which I have given years of thought and careful study ? Surely I am as free to express my opinions on public institutions as anyone else. In the present case, Mr Suttou thinks one thing, and I think another. Why may we not both express our thoughts and opinions with equal propriety ?—I am, &c, H. Hill.
