This day
Hearing that the adjudications were to be given in tho Native Lands Court yesterday, I attended and listened to the proceedings for a long , time to very little pm'pose. Judge Wilson of Auckland and Karaka Tarawhiti of Waikato, Assessor, occupied the bench. The two previous days had been taken up with hearing evidence, Messrs Cotterill and M. E. Miller, appearing for the Crown, and tho Ropihas, Noperas, Nia Nias, and a crowd of other natives were present in l'egard to their interests in the several blocks, eight in all. The claims on Umatoroa, Ko'parakore, To Kena, and Pukahu blocks (the latter is between Mahunga North and Whcnuakura) have still to be dealt with. The judgments given were as follows : — Otawhao.—The land taken by the Public Works Department in this case is that shown on the map before the Court and contains 158 a3r Iγ. The compensation duo to the owners of the land is £230 13s 3d. In this case we found that the land leased on one side of the line is leased at about 0 per cent, on a valuation of 30s per acre, and on the other side of the line the land leased yielding only 3J- percent, on the same valuation, hence we consider that the estimate of the Government is if anything tho reverso of being too low. The owners are named in tho certificate of title for Otawhao and their shares in the compensation have yet to be determined by the Conrt. Should any owner named in the certificate be deceased the share to descend to the successor or successors of said owner, and if the latter, tho share to bo divided as this Court shall determine. This Court will adjudicate as in partition any outstanding succession.
Otauga.—The land taken in this case is that shown upon the plan before the Court, containing 43a 3it 29p. The compensation due to the owners of the laud is £65 14s. The owners are named in the certificate of title to Otanga or Manawatu No. 4b, and are to share equally. Should any owner named in the certificate be deceased the share to descend to the successor or successors of said owners, and if tho latter, the share to bo divided as the Court shall determine. Tho Court will adjudicate as if in partition outstanding successive cases, if any. To Ohu.—The land taken in this case is that shown upon the plan before the Court, containing SIA 3b 31p. The compensation due is £123 las 9d. The owners are named in certificate of title to Te Ohu or Manawatrio No. 3. Conditions as to shares as in c 'so of Otanga. Piripiri.—Tho land taken iv this case is that shown iipon the plan before the Court, and contains 44a 3n 22r. The compensation due to tho owners of the laud is £67 19s. The owners are named in the certificate of title to Piripiri or Manawatu No. 2, and are to share as in the previous cases. The adjudication of successors to deceased owners in a portion of the cases will take place to-day, and others on Monday. The amounts awarded ure- far and away below what the natives expected. In one case they wanted £2.3 and another £4.) per acre. Mr S. M'Groevy met with a singular accident the other day while travelling by goods train to Ormondvillo. It appears that when nearing Taknpau the train passed over an unsound "bit of line, which caused the thing called by courtesy a carnage at tho end of the train to rock violently, and Mr M'Grcevy, whoso attention was occupied by an article in your paper or some other, was shaken down upon the floor and his left shoulder was thereby put out. Owing to the prolonged nature of the cases on Wednesday, Captain Freeee was obliged to postpone the Assessment Court for hearing objections to the valuations till a future date. There were only two, by Messrs Collins and Limbrick.
The National Insurance Co.'s Agent, Mr Louglman, yesterday paid over Mr M. JTran'a insurance on the house recently burnt while in tho occupation of the Brahams.
