WAIPAWA.
[.OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
This day. A meeting was bold yesterday afternoon ofj the principal tradesmen in Waipawa convened by Mr Evvcn to initiate a movement for starting a Fire Brigade. Mr Bibby occupied the chair. Mr Ewen explained his views and a scheme whereby a fire engine and necessary apparatus might be procured. Put briefly he proposed to get in the subscriptions recently promised, estimated at £200, and to raise the balance by means of a fancy dress ball and a bazaar. If the necessary apparatus -were provided the brigade itself could bo formed in a day, and by securing the occasional services of Mr Waterworth, Mr Grilberd or other similar person to train them in the routine duties they would rapidly become efficient.— Some conversational remarks were made by the chairman, and Messrs Moroney, Chamicr, Jull, and B. B. Johnson, some thinking the subscriptions should first be collected, and others requiring an assurance that insurance rates would be reduced in case of a brigade being formed. Mr Ewen said he thought they should put aside all idea of reduction of insurance. He was sure a ball would clear £30, and a bazaar £150, which -with £200 subscriptions would be sufficient, and proposed that the following gentlemen be a committee to carry out the scheme : Messrs Rathbone, Scrimageour, Bibby, Jull, B. B. Johnson, A. E. Jull, Baker, Garry, Collett, Miller, Nicholson, Harwood, Britten, Ewen, D. Moroney, Louglman, McGreevy, and S. Johnson. The latter proposed Mr Chamier in his stead. Mr B. B. Johnson seconded the motion, and it was carried. Mr Ewen was appointed secretary and treasurer. The following gentlemen were then appointed a ball committee : Messrs A. E. Jull, W. Bennett, D. Moroney, Ohamier, Garry, 8..8. Johnson, Williamson, Loughnan, and Martin, with power to add to their number, and the secretary to be general secretary of all committees. Mr Ewen was empowered to invite the cooperation of a committee of ladies to get up a bazaar. This closed the general business, and the general committee - held a first meeting. A request to Sir Robert Stout that he will address a public meeting at Waipawa next week was being readily signed last evening. Might I again gently remind the secretary of the Education Board that Waipukurau is not in the Patangata County, but in that of Waipawa. A man passed through here yesterday en route for gaol for twelve months with hard labor on a charge of exposing his person. Mr W. W. Carlile was the magistrate who passed this heavy sentence. The universal topic of conversation in these parts for a week past is that to which your last night's leading article was devoted. Not only ai'o so many race meetings bad, wasteful, and extravagant in the way you mention, but the waste of time is serious. As a person here remarked when asked to close his establishment in honor of St. somebody's day, they will need shortly to advertise the days on which they will bo open like the blacksmith , at Tahoraite, who notifies that he attends on Tuesdays and Fridays only. I have never been passingwhen he was at work, but I presume he is working on his land on the intervening days. Talking of blacksmiths, Messrs Grant and Go.'s new smithy in" Kenilwofth-street is making rapid progress, .
la the course of events now goods appear, Neal.and Close are showing now millinery, choice jackets, mantles, dress matersals, plushes, and trimmings. Inspection invited.
