PEDESTRIANISM.
HUTCHENS BEATEN AT MELBOURNE. Melhourne, February 2. A series of short pedestrian races for £500 and tho championship of the world between H. Hutcheus, champion of England, and W. Clarke, champion of. Australia, were concluded on Monday at the Flemington running grounds. Tho contests comprised races at three distances, viz., 50 yards, 100 yards, and ISO yards. Clarke was successful in the first two, thus winning the championship.
Clarke, who beat Hutchens in two sprint races, is an English professional, who arrived in Victoria only a short time ago. Some time ago he won one of the big Sheffield Handicaps easily in very fast time at Flemington.
