Taradale School Committee.
(own coeiiespondent.)
The usual monthly meeting of tho Taradale School Committee was held in the school-room last evening. Present—Messrs Orr (chairman), Drummond, Harpham, Harrison, and Martin. Correspondence was read from the Secretary to the Education Board, stating that the Board had sanctioned the appointment of another pupil-teacher, and suggesting that the Committee should recommend one. —Decided to advertise for " Candidate for Pupil teacher."
From the same, stating that the Education Board had decided to pay Miss EvanE head-master's salary for the month of May, in recognition of tho very special manner in which she carried out her duties during tho time the school was under her charge.—lt was resolved that the letter bo endorsed by tho chairman, on behalf of tho Committee, and forwarded to Miss Evans, to mark tho Committee's appreciation of her services. The report of the head-master was read, shewing that the average attendance for tho quarter ending 30th June was 85, but for the month of June, during which time the school was under his charge, the average attendance was 110, and askinsr that his salary might he paid on the latter average, pointing out that it would scarcely be just to him to base his salary on the average of tho late head-master. He also suggested that, as the parents of many children living at a distance requested that they might leavo school at 3 o'clock, it would be advisable for tho school to close at that hour during tho winter, and only allow an interval of one hour at mid-day. He also pointed out that the Inspector suggested the time of attendance should be extended one half hour daily.—Resolved to recommend that tho hoad-inastor's salary be paid on the average attendance for the mouth of June, and that no alteration be mado in the time of closing school, as the winter was now far advanced. In regard to extending the school hours, it was decided to take no steps at present.—A lisi of school requisites was attached to tho report, which was approved of by the Committee, and ordered to bo obtained.
Tenders were opened for improvements to teacher's residence, the lowest for tho whole work being £39 10s. This amount being in excess of tho amount granted by the Board, and the Committoo not having funds to mako up tho deficiency, it was decided to place the matter before the Education Board, asking that the grant might be increased to that amount. Tenders were opened for cleaning the school:—From J. Snell (undertaking other work beside that named in the specifications) for £1 10s per month. Fiom Mrs Cattanach, £1 9s per month.—Tho committee decided that extra work could not be considered, and accepted the tender of Mrs Cattanach.
Mrs Cattauach requested that the amount of her account for cleaning the teacher's residence (15s) should be placed to the credit of the prize-fund of tho school.—To be acknowledged with thanks. The meeting terminated by passing accounts to tho amount of £5 Bs.
