INQUESTS.

An inquest was held on Saturday on the body of James Mulholland, who died from the effects of chloroform while under surgical treatment. The evidence showed that Dr. Stalker had no professional assis.r taut'at the time, but only a friend of Mulholland, named Hughes, in the room. A dose of three-drachms was given. Dr. Stalker had examined Mulholland with th,e stethoscope previously. The post mortem showed that'the heart was healthy, but the' liver enlarged. The deceased was occasionally intemperate. The coroner, Dr Philson, stated he had performed hundreds of snrgical operations qn patients under chloroform without having a medical assistant. The jury returned a verdict of death by misadventure, absolved Dr. Stalker from blame, and added a rider recommending that in future in similar cases two medical men should be present. It transpired that deceased had a few months ago got a Government insuranco proposal filled up for £1000. He was passed by a loual medical officer, but the proposal was rejected at Wellington. : . verdict of accidental death was returned. The evidence showed that if the deceased as marker had used the danger flag the accident would not have occurred. Strict orders have been issued to volunteers not to indulge in private practice withont an officer being present. CmusTCHUBCii, This day.
At the inquest this morning on tho bodies of the children of the woman Roil, who had them "in her chargo" when they were drowned, Dr. Thomas stated that Mrs Roil suffered from puerperal mania after her last confinement, and on several subsequent occasions had complained of pains in her head. No evidence was adduced to show how the children came to be in the river, and the jury returned a verdict to that effect.
